Biography

Praised for her “full voice and striking presence” Emily Newton, soprano, is from Lake Jackson, Texas.  In December 2006 she was a winner of the New York District Met Competition.  Her most recent opera credits include Fiordiligi at the New Jersey Opera Theater SummerFest production of Così fan tutte and the American Premiere of Walter Braunfuls’ Die Vögel, conducted by Julius Rudel, at the Spoleto Festival USA (http://www.spoletousa.org).  Ms. Newton was praised by the Wall Street Journal as “a stand out in the large cast as the officious Wren.”  In addition, Ms. Newton gave her second private recital for the Spoleto Festival while in Charleston, SC.  Currently residing in New York City, she is a student of Ruth Golden.

Upcoming engagements include her second appearance with the Sherman Symphony singing the soprano solos in Beethoven's 9th Symphony.  Additional appearances this season included concerts with the Riverside Choral Society, Rutger's University, Bronx Symphony and Winston-Salem Symphony (http://www.wssymphony.org) as a soloist in orchestral works by Debussy, Beethoven, Charles Fussel, Handel and Vaughan Williams.

During the 05/06 season Ms. Newton was heard singing the soprano solos in Barber’s Knoxville:  Summer of 1915 and Debussy’s La Damoiselle Élue with Asheville Choral Society.  She also sang the role of Fiordiligi with The Bronx Opera Company in a production of Così fan tutte, sung in English (http://www.bronxopera.org/index.htm). She then repeated the role of Fiordiligi in its original Italian in New Jersey Opera Theater's (http://www.njot.org/) production of Così fan tutte under the baton of Steven Mossteller.  In addition, Ms. Newton was pleased to perform Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with North Carolina School of the Arts. 

 

Other orchestral appearances include her portrayal of Violetta in a concert of highlights from La Traviata with Sherman Symphony Orchestra, soprano solos in Schubert’s Mirjams Siegesgesang and Beethoven’s Mass in C with the Asheville Choral Society, selections from Der Rosenkavalier with the North Carolina Symphony, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Eve in Haydn’s Creation and soprano solos in Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Winston-Salem Symphony. She was a guest artist for the North Carolina Symphony’s Christmas Pops Concert and performed in a concert entitled Vom Bel Canto zum Verismo with the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria.  She has appeared with Piedmont Opera as Giovanna in Rigoletto  and High Priestess in Aïda. In addition, she was a Kenan Fellow at the Spoleto USA Festival in 2004 where she covered the role of Giulietta in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi and performed in recital.

As a charter member of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute (http://www.fletcheropera.com) at the North Carolina School of the Arts, she received her Professional Artist Certificate in 2004 and completed her Masters Degree as a Fletcher Fellow in 2003.  Her Opera Institute assignments included Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, the Female Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Antonina in Belisario, the title role in Bellini’s Beatrice di Tenda, Rosina in Mozart’s La Finta Semplice, Sadie in Carlisle Floyd’s Slow Dusk, and the Witch in Hansel and Gretel. She was selected to sing in master classes given by Marilyn Horne and Virginia Zeani during her graduate studies.  Ms. Newton was a winner in the 2004 Metropolitan Opera North Carolina District Auditions and was chosen as 2nd place winner of the 2004 Opera Guild of Charlotte Vocal Competition. While a student at NCSA (http://www.ncarts.edu) she studied with Dr. Marilyn Taylor. 

 She completed her Bachelor of Music degree in 2001 at the University of North Texas (http://www.music.unt.edu), where she sang Mimì in La Bohème, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and the Mother in Hansel and Gretel. While at UNT Ms. Newton studied with David Sundquist and was chosen as the Outstanding Undergraduate in Vocal Studies in 2001.  Additional undergraduate honors included the Grady Harlen Award for Professional Potential and first place in Senior Women’s Division, Texoma Region, National Association of Teachers of Singing.  Ms. Newton was also a finalist in the Dallas Opera Career Development Grant Competition in 2001.
